Solidarity Cement Tile Design Competition
Created for César Bazaar’s annual Solidarity Cement Tile Design Competition, this project explores the possibilities of a single playful module. Inspired by traditional cement tile patterns, it allows a variety of patterns and compositions to emerge from one simple tile through its placement and rotation within a repetitive grid.
The Module
The module is built on a regular grid, establishing a sense of order and repetition. An off-centre element disrupts this structure, reaching beyond its boundaries and creating connections with the surrounding forms.
Colour & Contrast
Working within the provided colour palette, I chose strong contrasts to give the pattern a bold and playful character.
Pattern Variations
The same module can be arranged and rotated in different ways, creating a range of patterns with their own rhythm and balance. As the modules come together, the black negative space creates its own shapes and reveals a hidden geometry within each composition.
Framing the Pattern
The competition calls for a single tile, but I wanted to explore how the design could extend into a complete floor composition. I developed an end tile that acts as a border, framing the central pattern and giving the overall composition a defined edge, while adding another layer of possibilities to the design.
